Elizabeth Bridgewater, Executive Director, Bruce Whitney, Homeownership Director, and Marion Major, Outreach Coordinator spent the day at the State House on February 17th for the Vermont Housing and Conservation Coalition day of advocacy. The coalition consists of conservation and housing groups and organizations across the state committed to the paired mission that the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board has implemented over the last 35 years. On these days of advocacy, the State House is teaming with energy and brings the very real on the ground impact of VHCB to the legislators.
The main ask of the day was to fully fund the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board to support critical work in communities across the state- accessing natural green spaces and affordable homes. This year the House recognized the 35 years of tremendous impact in Vermont. There was palpable interest and excitement around housing and conservation in both the house and senate. We had great conversations with legislators representing both Windsor and Windham county and towns. Elizabeth gave testimony on the impact of these funds with a presentation of the Bellows Falls Garage to the House Committee on Corrections and Institutions. To view the testimony- click here. Bruce shared his reflection on the day: “I enjoyed spending time in the State House today and participating in our imperfect, very human democratic process. The most important part thereof is talking to one another with coffee or muffin or grilled cheese in hand and letting each other know what is happening. I encourage anyone to head to your Statehouse and introduce yourself to your legislators.”
Indeed, we encourage everyone to not only visit the beautiful state house if you’re able but to know and speak with your local legislators. We are lucky to have such our legislators so embedded in and committed to our communities.
